Nicholas was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma in May 2019, three days before the end of his 6th grade year at Government Hill Elementary in Anchorage. Nic had been experiencing hip and leg pain, which had first been attributed to possible sciatic nerve or growing pain. Despite the pain he continued to train for triathlons and run with his Government Hill Elementary Running Club, often pushing through the pain and discomfort. When the pain persisted, an MRI was performed and revealed a tennis ball size mass in this pelvis and sacrum. He was referred to a facility outside Alaska due to the multi-doctor and need of specialists for this particular cancer.
Nic was transferred to John Hopkins where he will complete a minimum of 14, 2-week chemotherapy cycles along with radiation. His mom, on leave from a teaching position in Anchorage, is with him in Baltimore full time while his dad and 16-year-old brother Jack are staying in Anchorage.
Nic enjoys training for triathlons (which he fully intends to get back to!) and spending time with his friends from Government Hill and several other close friends from his former soccer team. As with many boys his age, the xbox is a favorite pastime and a blessing since he can play with his friends back in Anchorage while he is 3,500 miles away in Maryland.
